Should I install Windows 7 32 or 64 bit

Is there any benefit from installing Windows 7 64-bit when you have less than 4GB or RAM?

I just built a computer with the following specs:

MOBO: Biostar MCP6PB M2+

CPU: AMD Pehnom X3 8250e (triple core 64bit processor)

RAM: 2GB Ultra PC5400 DDR2 667Mhz

And I am trying to decide whether to put the 64 or 32 bit version of Windows 7 pro on the machine. I built it for someone else, and they are not very computer savvy, so the choice would have to be the one that balances better performance with the lesser possibility of running into technical problems.

The computer only has 2GB of ram now, but could easily be upgraded to 4 or more in the future, so would choosing the 64 bit version be better in term of future-proofing the computer, or would the decreased performance and added incompatabilites make the 32 bit version the better choice?

This has already been discussed at length in [Is there any benefit from installing Windows 7 64-bit when you have less than 4GB or RAM?](http://superuser.com/q/183201/). - nhinkle on October 14, 2010

The answer to your question is very preferential to whatever YOUR needs are. If you're willing to deal with some incompatibilities by using the XP mode, and looking to upgrade your memory to 4+ GB then the 64 bit version will suit you the best. Another thing to consider is that the newest version of Adobe premiere is 64 bit only, and that appears to be the trend of some software companies, thus making the use of 64 bit more important. Having personally used 64 bit for a few years now, I haven't run into many situations where I've not been able to work out any incompatibility issues.

This on top of the hardware DEP protection that x64 offers. - qroberts on October 14, 2010
